Webpage Basics

Article by Alice Hopkins
There are so many aspects to be looked upon when designing
a web page. How to work systematically is something that bothers.
This time I will help you solve this query.
Web pages are written in HTML. HTML is a special language
for web designing. Web pages are simple to explain. As the
name suggests they are simple pages made on web that provide
links to other pages or sectors of the text. But this does
not mean they are like printed pages. A heading underlined
on a paper means it is something vital or a heading of the
following text. Whereas an underlined word on a web page indicates
that it is a link to some other page having details about
it. Never make the mistake of considering a web page like
a printed page. Their attributes are variable. The similarity
is that both represent. That is it. Designing them, their
tools and techniques are different.
Web pages may consist of not only text but also pictures.
Pictures occupy space on a paper. But an image on a web page
adds to its volume and downloading time. This is because the
file gets bigger due to more bytes. A picture even if of a
small size of an inch or so, is equal to 1000s of bytes. For
a web page it is not the space but volume to be concerned
of. Nowadays web pages without color and image are considered
boring. To reduce download time we need to zip the files.
The browser will then quickly receive the compressed file
and decompress it to the user. This can help reduce time and
at the same time add pictures to your web page.
Now lets come to how your page will appear on other screens.
It won’t be the same everywhere. This is solely because
of different browser and operating systems and their versions.
When learning all this seems very difficult. It may seem to
some of you a dry topic but it isn’t actually. It is
just that beginners are not to learn the rules but refer to
and revise when the page is done.
To design you shall add color and good font to your page to
make it attractive. You need to decide a program to work upon.
For adding pictures to your web page you have two basic choices
between graphics. First is GIF i.e. graphic interface with
a limit of 256 colors for large pictures like headlines and
buttons. As I said before, all screens do not show the same
image, it is recommended to use a limit of 216 colors only.
Using less of colors is also a way to reduce file size.
The second option you have is of JPEG. This is for images
and photographs. And has no limit on color usage. There is
a new option of PNG as well not known well by now.
You can also use Adobe Photoshop for graphics. Its results
are incredible.
I think these are the basics for web page design that you
needed in a clear short writing. I have given you the points
to remember and referred to some tools that you can approach
for. Once you are done with your web page do revise it overall
and go through all aspects of it. You will surely end up with
an efficient to load and use web page with my tips and lessons.
